Dressing for the Room, Not the Photo

Everything most of us know about dressing for a date was learned from photographs: a full-length mirror, flat light, a whole outfit visible at once. A room is the opposite brief. Low light, close range, and the top half of you doing ninety per cent of the work while you stand two feet from somebody for an hour. Dressing for one and showing up to the other is the most common miss of the night.

DRESS FOR THE TOP HALF

Almost every conversation you have will be with someone looking at your face, your shoulders and your hands. That is the frame. It is where the good collar, the good fabric and the one interesting thing belong. Hardly anybody is looking at your shoes, which is an argument for wearing a pair you can stand in for eight hours.

TEXTURE BEATS COLOUR IN LOW LIGHT

Colour flattens in a dark room. Texture does not. Linen, knit, corduroy, raw silk, anything with a weave that catches a lamp will read from across the floor when a colour has gone to grey. This is also why the outfit that looked slightly dull in your bedroom often looks best at eleven at night, and why the very bright one can look like a costume.

THE HANDS

Hands are in frame constantly and nobody plans for them. A watch, a ring, sleeves that do what you want them to do. And the practical half of it: you are going to be holding a drink and a plate, so anything that needs a free hand to manage is going to lose.

ON THE CHAPTER

There is no dress code and there never will be, but the chapters do have their own weather. Pasta & Passion is the one where the room genuinely commits, and you will notice if you turned up in a t-shirt. Salsa & Sparks fills the floor earliest, so wear what you can dance in without thinking about it. Match & Matches is the quiet, sharp one where a good coat does real work. And each city page carries a line about the actual weather, because Jaipur in November and Chandigarh in December are not the same problem.
