What Happens After the Room Empties

This is the part guests ask about most and see least. Everything before midnight is a party. Everything after it is admin, and the admin is where a night like this either earns trust or loses it entirely.

THE MARKS

Before you leave, if you met somebody you would like to hear from again, you write their name down. That is the whole mechanism. It happens quietly, on paper, at the desk or with a host, and it takes about fifteen seconds. Nobody announces it, nobody is watching who goes over, and there is no app to open.

WHY PAPER

Because a phone in your hand at one in the morning is a phone you are still holding at half past, and because the alternative — a screen, a list of faces, a set of toggles — is exactly the thing everybody came out to get away from. Paper is slower, which is the feature. It means you write down the people you actually remember rather than working through a roster.

BY 9 AM

Contacts are released only where both people wrote each other down, and they reach you both at the same time, by nine the next morning. Nobody ever leaves with a number they were not given, and nobody is told who did not mark them — not by us, not by implication, not if they ask. One-sided ones simply do not exist as far as anyone else is concerned.

AND IF THERE ARE NONE

Then you get a message that says so, plainly, without a consolation paragraph attached. Nothing about it is shown to anybody else.

It is worth saying clearly: on any night, this happens to plenty of people, and it is not a verdict on you. It is one room on one night. The people who enjoy these evenings most tend to understand that early, because the eight hours are the product, and a match is something that sometimes happens as well.
