The Art of the First Conversation

Here is the strange thing about a room with no timer in it: the first ninety seconds matter more, not less. When a bell is going to ring anyway, a bad opening is survivable — it ends on schedule. When nothing is going to end the conversation except one of you deciding to, the opening is the whole negotiation. It decides whether the next ninety minutes happen.

STOP OPENING WITH WORK

“So what do you do?” is not a bad question because it is boring. It is a bad question because the answer is rehearsed. Everybody has a forty-word version of their job that they have said two hundred times, and you will get it word-perfect and learn nothing. You have just spent your best ninety seconds listening to a press release.

ASK ABOUT THE SPECIFIC

The best opener anywhere on this floor is some version of: what did you do today. It is small, it is answerable, it is impossible to have rehearsed, and it produces an actual detail — a walk, a terrible meeting, a thing that broke — which is the raw material of every good conversation that follows. Specific beats profound. Nobody has ever bonded over “what do you think happens when we die” in the first minute.

The other reliable one is the room itself. You are both standing in it, something is cooking two feet away, and the music is doing something. Noticing out loud is a conversation.

LET A SILENCE HAPPEN

A three-second pause is not a failure, and filling every one of them is the most common mistake in the building. Silence is where the other person decides whether to go a level down. If you talk into it, they never get the chance, and you both stay on the surface for an hour wondering why it felt like admin.

WHEN IT IS GOING WELL, STAY

This is the part people get wrong, because every other format has trained them out of it. There is no next chair. Nothing is going to move you along. If a conversation is good at minute twelve, the correct move is to still be in it at minute ninety, and to go and get food together rather than politely recycling yourselves into the room. The whole night is designed to allow exactly that, and you never need to apologise for it.
