Why Real-Life Chemistry Feels Different

This is an argument rather than a study, and we would rather say so at the top than dress it up. But it is an argument we have had enough times, in enough cities, that it is worth writing down: whatever people mean by chemistry, most of it is timing, and timing does not survive being typed.

THE HALF SECOND

Think about the last time you said something slightly risky to somebody new and they laughed at exactly the right moment. Not a beat late, not politely — right on it. That half second is doing an enormous amount of work. It tells you they were listening properly, that they understood the thing under the thing you said, and that they were willing to go there with you. You cannot fake it and you cannot practise it.

WHY TEXT CANNOT DO IT

A message arrives whenever it arrives. Somebody who is brilliant in a room and somebody who is simply a good editor produce identical text. There is no tempo, no overlap, no interruption, nothing that got said at the same time as something else and made you both stop. Everything is drafted. Weeks of that produce a lot of information about how somebody writes and almost none about what they are like to be near.

TALKING IN SYNC

The other thing you notice in a room is when two people fall into the same rhythm — the pace matches, they start finishing each other’s sentences badly, they lean in at the same time. You can watch it happen from across the floor and everybody knows what they are looking at. It takes minutes, it is obvious, and there is no equivalent of it in a chat window.

THE PRACTICAL UPSHOT

An hour in a room tells you more about compatibility than several weeks of messaging, and it tells you faster, and it does not let either of you become a slightly better-written version of yourselves in the meantime. That is not a knock on apps. Apps solved discovery, genuinely and permanently. They just cannot do this part, and they were never going to.

Which is the entire reason this exists: a room, an evening, good food, nothing on a clock, and the specific thing that only happens when two people are standing in the same place at the same time.
